Diagnosis procedure - Breast clinic protocol
BUPA Gatwick Park Hospital, Breast Clinic
MR. ADRIAN BALL Consultant Surgical Oncologist
DR. ALEX HAWRYCH Consultant Radiologist
SUE GATTENESI Breast Care Nurse Specialist

Please note that patients are encouraged to bring a partner, relative or friend into the consultation.
If you have been referred because of a breast lump you may require "triple assessment" for diagnosis. This involves:
- A physical examination
- A mammogram (Xray) and/or an ultrasound scan
- A fine-needle aspiration and/or core biopsy
All tests are normally carried out on the day of your visit. Apart from the core biopsy, results are usually ready by the end of the clinic, if you choose to wait.
Physical examination:
Mr. Ball will perform this with a chaperone present (or your partner).
Mammogram:
A mammogram is performed by a radiographer and involves two Xrays of each breast. It can be a bit uncomfortable.
Breast ultrasound:
A breast ultrasound is performed by consultant radiologist Dr. Hawrych, and involves sliding a probe over the breast after spreading jelly on it. It is painless.
Fine-needle aspiration:
A fine-needle aspirate involves passing a small needle into the breast one or more times in quick succession to sample cells or drain a cyst. It is similar to a blood test and can be a bit sore. Mr. Ball normally does this after your physical examination.
Core biopsy:
A core biopsy involves passing a larger needle into the breast after injecting local anaesthetic to obtain some tissue. It is also a bit sore and bruising is common. Dr. Hawrych normally does this during ultrasound examination.
